Also, when Walter White voiced Lord Ram ๐๐ฝ ๐๐ฝ
Hello friends
Sometimes, celebrities make grand statements and are then prepared to make a wager on them. And in some rare and sporting cases, celebs have actually followed through on their word. In this weekโs newsletter, we take a look at a few instances where losing a bet has had some interesting consequences.ย
Things we learnt this week ๐ค
Q: What connects the victors of the 1983 cricket World Cup and a miraculous Leander Paes win in the Davis Cup?
Answer: Both ended with journalists eating their words..literally. David Frith was the editor of the Wisden Cricket Monthly and in his preview of the 1983 World Cup had derided the Indian team for even being invited for the tournament given their dismal record. In September 1983, David Frith published an editorial with the headline โIndia made me eat my wordsโ with an accompanying photograph where he was eating the words. Similarly, Rohit Brijnath, considered among the finest Indian sportswriters, had written a preview for a India v Switzerland Davis Cup game in March 1993, by stating that India had no chance and he would happily eat his words if India proved otherwise. The combined team of Leander Paes and Ramesh Krishnan won a tough tie 3-2 making Rohit Brijnath eat his words. Wonder if they called their words humble pies.ย
Richard Branson and Tony Fernandes are super rich men with stakes in multiple businesses including the airline industry and Formula One. In 2010, the billionaires bet on who would finish higher among their teams at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Tony Fernandesโ Lotus racing team finished ahead of Virgin Racing. The conditions of the bet? the loser would dress up as a stewardess and serve drinks in the winners airline. Branson donned red lipstick, a flight attendantโs skirt and high heels, served drinks, made intercom announcements and chatted up passengers on an AirAsia X flight from Perth, Australia, to Kuala Lumpur. Richard Branson - King of the skies, queen of the aisles.ย
Werner Herzog is considered a pioneer of the New German cinema movement. Errol Morris was a documentary maker who made films about very unusual subjects. In 1975, in order to encourage Morris, Herzog mentioned that if Morris was able to complete his film โGates of Heavenโ, a documentary about pet cemeteries, Werner Herzog would eat a shoe. Once Gates of Heaven was made, Werner Herzog stuck to his promise and converted his bet into a documentary where he cooked his shoe. The shoes were boiled with garlic, herbs, and stock for 5 hours (he preferred his shoes medium rare) before Herzog finally fulfilled his end of the bet. Hereโs an alternate title for the documentary - โChicken Soup for the soleโ.ย ย
