The Twitter thread that inspired a movie, & the characters of PS-1 | #121
The mobile phone choices of villains 🤔
Hello,
They say ‘Success is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration.’ With the deadline for this newsletter looming large and with some perspiration across the brow, we looked for that 10% inspiration…and voila!
This week’s edition of the newsletter is about what inspires things, specifically about offbeat inspirations for movies. We hope to leave you all inspired after reading this.
Things we learnt this week 🤓
We’ve written our fair share of Twitter threads but none of them have been made into a movie…yet. Zola, was a comedy crime film released in 2020 inspired by a viral Twitter thread. Back in 2015, Aliyah Zola, wrote a 148 tweet thread about a trip that she took to Florida. The tweets caught the attention of Hollywood bigwigs and the film got made. It was a critical success with a 88% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. If the tweet thread was about cheese, would the film be titled Gorgon Zola. <badum tiss>
We are familiar with the tales of Jack Sparrow, Elizabeth Swann and a lucrative franchise called ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’. The inspiration of the first movie was a theme park ride. The original theme park ride was the last ride that Walt Disney worked on and it opened 3 months after his death. The scene where the prisoners beg a dog with a bone was taken directly from the ride itself. Thanks to the success of the movies, we now see changes to the ride, based on incidents from the film. Clearly some depp thought behind the movies.
The 10th installment of the Fast and Furious series is due to release next year. Spoiler: Apparently its not going to be called Fast10: your seatbelts 😔
The film that launched the series way back in 2001 was based on a magazine article. Ken Li witnessed the theft of a car and went inside the world of underground street car racing. His article in Vibe magazine was published in 1998 and that was the basis of the screenplay which launched the movie franchise. Is Vin Diesel working in this franchise a case of nominative determinism?
