(Why are we sending this on a Friday you ask? Scroll all the way down for some exciting news!)
Hello friends
Vijay Merchant was a man of few words. He was asked when a cricketer should retire to which he pithily said “Quit when people ask why and not when.”
This past week Ash Barty shocked the world when she decided to retire from tennis at the age of 25. Barty, a former cricketer herself, was definitely asked “Why?”
She was the reigning Wimbledon and Australian Open champion and was the world number 1 for over 100 weeks.
This week we look at people who called it quits at the top of their game, much to the surprise of the general public who definitely asked them ‘Why?’
Things we learnt this week 🤓
It is one thing when fans ask why you retired, but imagine your biggest rival asking the same question. When Bjorn Borg, at age 26, having captured 11 grand slam titles retired, the man who felt lost the most was his rival John McEnroe. McEnroe felt that Borg made him a better player and wished to have played more with him at his peak. Today, they are still rivals as team captains of Team World and Team USA at the Laver Cup. The Borg-McEnroe rivalry was truly a song of ice and fire.
Vinod Khanna charmed his way into the audience's hearts in the 70s and 80s. His smouldering good looks along with great acting chops, made him among the most sought after actors in the industry. Incredibly, he quit all of that to become a follower of the spiritual guru Osho Rajneesh in Rajneeshpuram. He eventually returned to India and to films after a 5 year hiatus. Was his return expected? fo-sho
Before Facebook, Instagram etc there was MySpace. Tom Anderson, created MySpace with Chris DeWolf in 2003 and till 2009 was the largest social networking site in the world (us boomers remember it well). Tom Anderson, known as “Tom from MySpace”, was usually the first friend for MySpace for new users. Post 2010, Tom Anderson has basically been retired and his Twitter profile reads "Enjoying being retired”, “Enjoying the good life / New Hobby: Photography.” Godspeed Tom, our old ‘friend’.
