Connect Cricket, The Beatles and Sir Ian McKellen | #111
Also, an Indian who became the face of anti-abortion struggle in Ireland
Hello friends,
It’s our Eleventy first edition - a rather curious number and a very respectable edition for a newsletter. Given the significance of 111 to Hobbits and other inhabitants of the world created by JRR Tolkien, we dedicate this newsletter to the world of Lords of the Rings and some interesting stories associated with it.
Things we learnt this week 🤓
In 2002, England took on New Zealand in a largely forgotten one day international at Wellington. But millions of movie watchers have “heard” this game as Peter Jackson got the cricket crowd to make noises, which were eventually used in the movie. The match itself was a bit of a bore with New Zealand emerging easy victors after England collapsed to 89 all out - that must have been mordor.
On Oct. 20, 2014 Sir Ian McKellen stopped by the Chew Valley School in England and addressed the students. Instead of rambling on as school speakers tend to do, McKellen simply stood by a window and asked, “If you don’t do your revision properly, do you know what will happen?” And then he mentions this…
Before Peter Jackson made the trilogy there was a serious chance that Paul McCartney was going to play Frodo and John Lennon as Gollum and the group along with others being directed by Stanley Kubrick. But alas, JRR Tolkien wasn’t keen on a pop group doing his story. LOTR the musical - that’s what I am Tolkien about.
