Scottish psychiatrist RD Laing once said “We are effectively destroying ourselves by violence masquerading as love”. He was talking about the human condition of course, but it also aptly describes the recent Will Smith-Chris Rock incident at the Oscars. Of course this ‘slap heard around the world’ spawned several memes and even a silly game, but in today’s newsletter we look at other public celebrity altercations which nearly escalated to violence. We don’t condone any violence, and just want to be a vessel for love. So please give us a standing ovation once you’re done reading this.
Things we learnt this week 🤓
Talk about the Wrath of Khan - Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan are close these days, but they were once involved in a physical altercation at Katrina Kaif’s birthday party. The fight got so ugly, that Shahrukh invoked Salman Khan’s ex-girlfriend Aishwarya Rai and both nearly got to blows. Shahrukh Khan admitted that he was tired that day and wishes never to be like that again. Not many admit to their mistakes, but Shahrukh Khan.
Dennis Lillee and Javed Miandad were fiery characters, who could be lit up with a quick spark. Chasing an improbable 543 to win, Javed Miandad pushed the ball for an easy single and collided with Lillee. What happened next led to Wisden describing it as ‘one of the most undignified incidents in test history’. Miandad claimed that Lillee blocked him and "pushed him out of the way"; Lillee's version of events has Miandad subjecting him to abuse as he approached. They might have come to blows if not for umpire Tony Crafter, stepping in to hold back Lillee and Miandad. Australia eventually won the game by a whopping 286 runs. Miandad was the Karachi ka Gunda in this one.
It was always going to be a tough task to split a mega empire between 2 sons. Dhirubhai Ambani’s will was too ambiguous and it was left to his wife Kokhilaben to make the final decision. She decided to give oil and chemicals to Mukesh, and electricity and telecom to Anil. But despite the then largely equal split, things got heated between the 2 brothers with Anil filing a defamation case against Mukesh for an interview in the New York Times. The brothers drifted apart and the only closeness they seemed to have experienced was being neighbours before Mukesh moved to Antilla. It was quite a bother to have a brother.
