“Remember to always be yourself. Unless you can be Batman. Then always be Batman” - random Internet quote.
Batman is a true icon in the world of entertainment. Originally started as a response to the success of Superman, Batman has made millions for DC Comics via TV shows, cartoons, comic books and movies. With the recent release of ‘The Batman’ starring Robert Pattinson, this week’s newsletter looks at the history of this pop-culture phenomenon.
Things we learnt this week 🤓
The image associated with Batman is that of a dark knight - dressed in all black. But creator Bob Kane initially thought of him as blonde with a red leotard. And it might have stayed that way if not for Bill Finger, who made Batman a more bat-like superhero and was responsible for many its iconic villains such as Joker and Penguin. He even gave the name to the man behind the mask - Bruce Wayne.
Why ‘Bruce Wayne’? Well Bill Finger gave chose this name from 2 real life heroes. Bruce from a Scottish national hero - Robert the Bruce and Wayne from Mad Anthony Wayne - a hero of the American Revolution. Bill Finger also chose Gotham city after looking randomly at a phone book and pointing at Gotham Jewellers.
One of the earliest adaptations of Batman was the campy Batman TV series in the 1960’s that saw Adam West don the role of the Caped Crusader. It was a more comic take on the superhero than the much darker tone associated with later adaptations. Though unintentional, the 1966 jersey of the Pittsburgh Steelers came to be known as the Batman jersey, as it closely resembled the dress worn by Adam West. In a nice tribute, the team featured in the 2012 movie - Dark Knight Rises, was the Pittsburgh Steelers.
One of TV’s greatest comic moments has to be this scene where Bruce Wayne talks to Batman via a hotline. Don’t miss this one
