It’s hard to escape advertising these days. While crappy ones force you to hit the “skip ad” button on YouTube, only a few like the classic 'I love Rasna' break through to connect with audiences. This week we continue our ‘Best of 2021’ theme with the best Indian ads of the year. Before that, here’s an ad for hot singles in your area.
Things we learnt this week 🤓
The Venkaboys - Created by ex-All India Bakchod member Tanmay Bhat, this ad introduced us to the Venkaboys which comprised the OG 90’s cricket gang - Venkatesh Prasad, Javagal Srinath, Maninder Singh and Saba Karim, clad in an all white ensemble. Initially the producers intended to feature an all-Kannadiga lineup with Anil Kumble and Sunil Joshi. However, Joshi contracted Covid and Kumble was coaching the Punjab Kings during the IPL, hence Singh and Karim joined the quartet. We want it that way 🎶
Not Just a Cadbury Ad - This was a stellar example of cutting-edge tech and social responsibility coming together to create a beautiful ad. Conceptualized by Ogilvy and Wavemaker, the ad campaign enabled local stores to have Sharukh Khan endorse their businesses with the help of some AI-powered technology. If only we can get SRK to endorse IWTK now.
Fitness is not an option - Cult Fit tapped into pop culture nostalgia with their ‘Fitness is not an option’ campaign, where they created spoofs of popular Bollywood movies. One of them was the iconic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge climax scene where Simran runs toward Raj on the train. The hook of the ad is when Simran doesn’t make it due to a lack of stamina. Unfortunately it was taken down after being flagged by Yash Raj Films.
Kuch Khaas Hai - Yes this is the second Cadbury ad on today’s list (yes, we like chocolate!) but the progressive rendition of the iconic Dairy Milk ad of the 90s definitely needs a spot in the highlights. The model in the new gender swap remake, Kavya Ramachandran, is a Chennai-based educator, swimmer, actor and runs Sukha Education Foundation that teaches communicative English. Safe to say they knocked this out of the park.
