The top Desi memes of the year, and the $500M pizza | #81
Also, the inspiration for the IWTK logo? 🤔
Hello
A decade ago who would have thought memes would become a form of social currency like it is today. The word was originally coined by Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book ‘The Selfish Gene’ as an attempt to explain how ideas replicate, mutate, and evolve. Presciently, this is exactly how memes on the Internet go viral.
This week, we’re kicking off our series on the ‘Best of 2021’ with the Top 5 local memes. Warning: Dank lvl high
Things we learnt this week 🤓
Pawri Ho Rahi Hai - You know the one we’re talking about. This video originated from a video by Pakistani Instagrammer Dananeer Mobeen. The Pawri Girl took the internet by storm and not just in her country. Netizens in India, celebrities included, collectively lost their calm as they whipped out their own renditions of the “Yeh humari car hai, Yeh hum hain, aur yeh humari pawri ho rahi hai (This is our car, this is us and this is our party).” Here are some of our favorite versions:
Jal Lijiye - The best Desi memes come with a spoonful of nostalgia and a pinch of cringe. The scene from the 2006 movie Vivah, where Amrita Rao offers water to the guests, made the perfect template to capture sarcasm. Rao further owned the Twitter trend with her Holi rendition. With Neeraj Chopra’s Olympic win the meme tweaked itself to “Javelin Lijiye” to incorporate the theme. Check it out

The Cred ads - From Rahul Dravid's aggressive alter ego, to Jackie Shroff grooving and Neeraj Chopra surprising the nation with his acting skills, the recent Cred Ads caught fire online. But the true test of a brand’s advertising success is judged by the memes it influences. Check out few of the best ones:
Dharma Production babies, is that you?
The Family Man - Several scenes from Season 2 of the Amazon Prime show ‘The Family Man’ sparked a meme-fest on social media. People creatively expressed the dreariness of mundane life events with a sprinkle of political satire. Some on the most popular ones were:
We don’t condone violence but…
Who hadn’t watched it, had to Google it.
It’s Not Funny - While it wasn’t funny for Farhan Aktar’s character to get involved with Hrihtik Roshan’s girlfriend in the movie Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara, the jokes it inspired definitely were. The snippet from the movie provided the template for meme enthusiasts to create the perfect digital reaction to ill times and unfortunate situations from their lives. Take a look at some of our favorites:
