The Indian island that disappeared, and suffering from climate change | #80
Also, why Big Oil coined 'carbon footprint'
“Global warming isn’t real because I was cold today!
Also great news! World hunger is over because I just ate.”
-Stephen Colbert, the character.
Climate change is a hot topic now. If you meet someone, do take a few minutes to talk to them about climate change - it’s an ice breaker. [All puns intended]
This week we dedicate the newsletter to stories about climate change.
Things we learnt this week 🤓
For over 30 years, India and Bangladesh had argued over a tiny island over the Bay of Bengal. New Moore island in the Sunderbans was the area of intense diplomatic talks between the 2 neighbors but global warming resolved the problem - The island sank due to an alarming rate of increase in sea levels in the Sunderbans. Maybe we should have a New Moore’s Law - Sea levels double every 2 years.
Not only is land disappearing, climate change is causing damage to everyone’s health. Recently, a Canadian woman was facing breathing issues and in a first, was diagnosed to be suffering from ‘Climate Change’. Doctors said heatwaves and poor air quality were responsible for her condition. Don’t panic and take deep breaths (or not)
There is a lot of talk about individuals doing their bit for the climate to reduce their carbon footprint - but did you know the term ‘Carbon Footprint’ was promoted by British Petroleum with a bit of help from Ogilvy & Mather ? This was to promote the slant that climate change is not the fault of Big Oil, but that of individuals. BP pulling a fast one on us shows that their sense of humour is just like their oil - crude.
Only in India 🇮🇳
Music at weddings are a necessity, but in this case it nearly caused the end to the marriage. The cleric at a wedding refused to solemnize the wedding till the DJ stopped the music. Guessing the cleric took objection to the song ‘Ooh aah let the music play.’
