Ah the 90’s…
Coming home from school and switching on Cartoon Network to watch SWAT Kats. Also, seeing Cartoon Network stop magically transform into TNT at 8pm. Catching up with friends on landline telephones. Hearing that sweet sound of a modem trying to connect to the Internet, only to be disconnected because an aunt called up.
Those were the days eh?
If you want to relive those days guilt-free, join us for a special fundraiser quiz with a Back to the 90’s theme. Things we learnt this week
Back when fake news wasn’t fully mainstream, a photo of a man atop the World Trade Center with an aircraft in the background did the email rounds. Turns out the photo was fake and a man named Peter had visited the WTC in Nov 1997 when he took the photo. Post Sep 11, 2001, he photoshopped the plane in and sent it to his friends as a joke. It went viral. He laid low for a few weeks to avoid infamy, but when someone else claimed that he was the man in the picture, Peter admitted to his wrongdoing.
Salman Khan has been in the news for his latest release Radhe - our commiserations to those who watched it. But back in the early 90’s he was struggling to get film roles. A worried Salim Khan requested GP Sippy to put out a word that he has signed Salman for a film, though nothing was in the works. As luck would have it, Tips decided to buy the music rights of this non-existent film and GP Sippy ended up making the movie - Patthar Ke Phool. No wonder the film had a song “Kabhi Tu Chhalia Lagta Hai”.
Back in the 90’s, Monica Lewinsky made headlines for her affair with Bill Clinton. She went through a torrid time as she was the subject of countless jokes and online abuse. In fact she’s name checked so many times in hip hop that this website has listed over 100 songs that reference Monica Lewinsky. Unsurprisingly, the RD Burman song “Monica…. Oh my darling” is not on the list.
