“A person’s name is to him or her the sweetest and most important sound in any language.” – Dale Carnegie.
Hey we get it. Names are important yada yada yada. Sometimes though, confusion about a name can lead to hilarity. This week’s newsletter explores gaffes, mistakes and faux pas in name-related situations.
Things we Learnt this week
One of Rishi Kapoor’s most memorable roles was that of Akbar Ilahabadi in Amar Akbar Anthony - the only movie where Rishi Kapoor got a billing ahead of Amitabh Bachchan. Rishi Kapoor was shooting for a movie in Bikaner, when he got a call from Manmohan Desai. The line had a lot of disturbance. When Manmohan Desai mentioned that Rishi had to play Akbar, Rishi responded - Sir how can I play Akbar, my grandfather has played Akbar. Only later after a meeting in Mumbai, did he realize he wasn’t playing Akbar the Great. Manmohan Desai missed an opportunity to say “Aloha Akbar”
Roy Hodgson is currently the oldest Premier League manager at the bright young age of 74. He’s had a long and storied managerial career, but his stint at Liverpool lasted less than a year. One of the reasons for this short stint could be that he sold the wrong player by mistake. Alexander Kačaniklić, was a promising young player at Liverpool who was sold to Fulham. Only later did Roy Hodgson realize that he had sold the wrong Alex. Well that’s one way to lose a pool of players here. for sure.
And finally, a story closer to home - Hari Shenoy, a dashing young man from Mysore, started getting tagged to Big Basket complaints on Twitter. The humble Mysorean was being mistaken for Hari Menon, CEO of Big Basket. Rather than ignore or block the tweets, Hari (Shenoy) brought out his sarcastic best on Twitter to people who tagged him. Check out his replies to people waiting for their orders. “Where is my milk? Hari up and don’t be late.”

Salvador Dali was an interesting man. He was once commissioned by Air India to design an ashtray. As compensation, Dali asked for a baby elephant in lieu of money. What happened next will blow your mind.
The remarkable efforts of Mary Roy (mother of author Arundhati Roy) and her struggle to ensure Indian daughters get equal property rights.
Only in India
We are all trying our best to fight this virus. But there’s one thing we haven’t tried - numerology. This person is confident the pandemic will end if the spellings are changed. Maybe the message is - Yeh Bhi try Caronaa?
