“Artificial Intelligence is no match for Natural Stupidity”
There are many contrasting views on AI or Artificial intelligence (not Average Indian) as is sometimes said. Some say AI is going to change the world for good, some say AI is going to change the world for bad, but let’s face it, AI is here to stay. In this week’s newsletter we look at a few instances where artificial intelligence didn’t quite live up to its name.
Things we Learnt this week:
British Police has a serious problem on hand - tackling the spread of child pornography. One of their silver bullets to tackle this issue was to use AI to scrape the internet for nefarious material. But the system they used confused desert pics for nude pics. As they say on the interwebz - send dunes.
To reduce the cost of producing television content from the lower leagues of Scottish football, a marketing genius came up with the idea of a camera that automcatically tracks the ball. Unfortunately, no one considered the possibility of a bald referee. During a recent live stream, the AI camera operator repeatedly confused a lineman's bald head for the soccer ball itself. So much for bald-tracking err… ball-tracking technology.
Yeh hum hai, yeh hamara Alexa hai, aur yeh hamari pawri ho rahi hai… A German man returned home late one night and realized his key wasn’t working. On visiting the local police station, it turns out that his keys were changed by the police. They visited his house after Alexa had played really loud music at 1.50AM. Neighbours complained of the raucous party and police were forced to intervene. After a “Daya dawraza tod do”, they realized Alexa was alone in the house. They unplugged the device and installed a new lock. This Is So Sad, Alexa Play Despacito.

India in Space - Did you know that a man named Ravish Malhotra was chosen to train for spaceflight in the Soviet Union's Intercosmos program. He served as backup for Rakesh Sharma on the Soyuz T-11 mission which launched the first Indian into space, but never went to space himself. For more such fun facts check out this book, especially great for kids.
Enjoy Enjaami - Brilliantly shot with meaningful lyrics that cover everything from attachment to land, environmental issues, the problems faced by landless labourers, and how to love nature. An earworm that is very meaningful.
