Now that we have grabbed your attention…
Well, that is one of the most famous ad formats of all time. Advertising in India has a long history. When radio was popular we had catchy jingles such as- “Vajradhanti, Vajradhanti, Vicco Vajradhanti” (we know you’re singing along 😉). The early years of TV were first seen as an extension to radio ads, with a focus on catchy jingles. It soon evolved into a 5 billion dollar behemoth. This newsletter takes a look down memory lane into a few memorable ads that still resonate today.
Things we learnt this week
One of India’s most iconic ads was the Liril ad conceptualized by Alyque Padamsee. His research team discovered that the only time an average Indian housewife had to herself was 15 minutes a day in the shower. This inspired him to create a concept of a woman under a waterfall in the ad. The ad showcased freedom of the woman, rather than just showcasing the product and proved to be very successful over the years. In fact, there hasn’t been very little change to the concept in a Liril Ad, only the faces have changed.
Ponds most famous tagline was ‘Googly Woogly Woosh’. The tagline was a result of a romantic moment between newly weds Piyush Pandey and his wife Nita Pandey - when she pulled his cheeks and said Googly Woogly Woosh. Awww ❣
The National Literacy Mission was a nationwide program started by the Government of India with the aim of educating over 80 million adults in the age group 15 to 35. They took the help of Piyush Pandey to get the word out. Piyush’s aide Suresh Mullick suggested the use of classical music in the ad. Piyush remembered a song he had created for a Unilever product called Sunlight detergent powder - ‘Purab se surya uga’. He sought permission from Unilever to use it for the NLM campaign and we got a classic ad.
From Twitter, with Love
The Muria tribe in Chattisgarh has an unusual way for a man to profess his love. We’re guessing this is how couples comb together.

Things we’re reading / watching / listening to:
Inside the Stalker Hell of Italian Footballer Fabio Quagliarella - In 2009, Fabio Quagliarella had signed a 5 year deal to play for Napoli - his boyhood club. After only one season, he was sold off to arch-rivals Juventus, making him enemy number 1 at his own club. His poor performance, which he couldn’t explain to fans then, was because of a stalker who penetrated his inner circle and managed to victimize him. A chilling tale.
Kamyaab - This charming Sanjay Mishra starrer is about a washed-up ‘character-actor’ who wants to be a part of one memorable film to get a record of featuring in 500 films. Equal parts hilarious, emotional and deft, this film will also surprise you with its many apt cameos. Perfect for a weekend view.
