Why women are chilly at work, the story of HMT watches | #40
Also, a guide on 'How to get into K-Pop'
“It's a Man's Man's Man's World” sang James Brown and boy, was he right! (see what we did there?) Throughout history, the perspectives and experiences of women have been neglected. The lives of men have represented the lives of everybody in the world. This week’s newsletter takes a look at how even the simplest things in this world have been designed by men and for men, completely ignoring half the planet.
Things we learnt this week
You might have noticed some women using a blanket for warmth in the office, despite the warm temperature. The reason is simple - the office was designed for men. Most office buildings set the temperature according to an old formula, that takes into account only the metabolic rate for men. And if office temperatures could be set taking into account a woman’s metabolic rate, we would also save energy and emit less greenhouse gases.
Women are more likely to be killed or injured in a motor-accident than men. This is not a slight on their driving ability. It is due to the fact that automotive crash tests were designed to represent an average man. Key stat - women are 17% more likely to have a fatal accident in spite of wearing a seat belt. There is a need to accelerate the use of crash test dummies that are representative of women, while testing cars.
In March 2019, there was an announcement by NASA about an all-female spacewalk. At the last moment, NASA had to replace a female astronaut with a male one. The reason? Not enough spacesuits. NASA uses a design which suits male bodies, ironically originally designed by the International Latex Corp (Bra makers). Read about how impractical it is for women to use the spacesuits that are clearly optimized for male bodies.

Things we’re reading / watching / listening to:
What Pixar has done with ‘Soul’ is somehow deal with a potentially dark and mysterious concept of death and afterlife, and still infuse so much beauty and warmth. It is an excellent balance of otherworldly Synth atmospheric sounds by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross combined with the Brilliant jazz playing of Jon Batiste, musically this movie just hits all the right notes and takes the story right into your heart!
