The discovery of pav bhaji, and Martin Luther King in an erotic film | #36
Have you seen episode 6 of our panel quiz yet?
January 15th was the 92nd birth anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr. The United States celebrates his birthday on the 3rd Monday of January every year, giving people a 3 day weekend. Maybe Republic Day in India can follow this concept eh.
MLK was an extraordinary man, a fantastic orator and a civil rights activist who was inspired by the life of Mahatma Gandhi and Christian beliefs. Did you know that when he won the Nobel Peace Prize, he thanked Gandhi in his speech? Today’s newsletter is dedicated to MLK.

Things we learnt this week:
MLK delivered his iconic ‘I have a dream’ speech in 1963 at Washington. But where is the speech today? George Raveling, an assistant basketball coach at Villanova, asked King for the speech. King handed him the papers. Raveling skimmed through the speech and realized the words ‘I have a dream’ were not there and were ad-libbed at the moment. Talk about last minute inspiration.
Martin Luther King met his wife through the 1950’s Tinder - the telephone. They shared common values of civil rights and equality, and were married in a beautiful ceremony by Martin Luther King Sr. The interesting thing is that they spent their honeymoon at a…. Funeral parlor. This is because they couldn’t find a hotel room that allowed African American couples, in heavily segregated Alabama.
There have been many movies on the life of Martin Luther King, but the strangest one probably is the Swedish erotic movie called I am Curious. This controversial film featured an interview of Martin Luther King when he visited Stockholm (accompanied by singer Harry Belafonte) to drum up support for the Civil Rights movement.
