#27 A Bollywood actor who was an Olympian, & the lowest rated IMDb movie
Also, would you watch the same bad movie every week?
“We love films and story telling as people. It’s just a human compulsion to listen and to tell stories.” - Oscar winner Mychael Danna
We all love the movies. Who doesn’t love the story of a hero and heroine falling in love, or the protaganist who saves the world in the end. These are the stories that we watched on a cable TV on a Sunday afternoon that made us feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Our next two quizzes pay tribute to these movies.
This Sunday on Karnataka Rajyotsava is the Kannada Talkies Quiz. Hosting the quiz is Meghavi Manjunath - the host of the legendary TV show ‘Thatt Antha Heli’. Joining us in the panel are Thejaswi Udupa - columnist and one of India’s most famous quizmasters, and also National Award winner Hemanth Rao - director of films such as ‘Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu’ and ‘Kavaludaari’ AND the writer of Andhadhun!
Our previous Bollywood quiz was a box office smash. Will the sequel be bigger and better? (spoiler: YES!) Be an Adarsh Balak and sign up for the quiz now.
Three things we learnt this week:
Jankidas Mehra (pictured below) was a character actor and production designer who acted in more than 1000 movies including hits such as ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’ and ‘Dr. Kotnis Ki Amar Kahani’. What’s astonishing about his life is that he was an accomplished cyclist who broke the world record in cycling between 1934 and 1942. In his column in ‘Film Mirror’ he claims to have lost his chance at an Olympic medal because on the day before the event he was ‘seduced by a Bollywood star who had her vile way with him’. Excuses excuses!
He also started the Cycling Federation of India in 1946. What a champ 🏆We celebrated the 99th birth anniversary of the one and only RK Laxman. Strange that his cartoons from the 60’s and 70’s are as relevant today as ever. Check out this thread of some of his greatest hits over the years
At one point, the Ranveer-Priyanka-Irrfan starrer ‘Gunday’ was the lowest rated movie on IMDb. Now the movie wasn’t that bad and we’ve definitely seen worse. *cough* RGV Ki Aag *cough* but the reason why it had such a low rating will definitely surprise you!
Things we’re reading / watching / listening to:
The Worst Idea of All Time - Speaking of terrible movies, a unique podcast where two New Zealand comedians with a lot of time on their hands watch the same bad movie every week of the year. Imagine watching Grown Ups 2 and Sex and the City 2 fifty two times. We’re quite sure this is against the rules of the Geneva Convention.
Mission ISRO podcast - This podcast narrates the story of India's venture into space and how scientists like Sarabhai, Bhabha, Kalam, and many more shaped the space programme of India over the years to make it what it is today.
