Hello friends
It’s that time of the year when the world tunes into Dhoni Darshan. The Indian Premier League will be eligible to vote as it turns 18 this year.
This year as the competition returns, scores are expected to be higher than last year with more <insert sponsor name> Maximums and making bowlers question their existence. Maybe the next competition could be as to which team has a better bowling machine?
We decided to take a look at some unusual occurrences in T20 cricket in this week’s newsletter. Read this along with a cup of Nescafe Coffee and enjoy a Citi Moment of success.
Things we learnt this week 🤓
The events of July 14th, 2019 at Lords are etched in cricket followers' minds. England somehow managed to win the World Cup by ‘the barest of margins’. But the absurdity of that rule had happened before in the IPL when in 2014, during a game between Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders ended in a tie during the normal time, Steve Smith placed the ball in the gap and quickly ran a 2 in the last ball of the super over when 3 were needed. He quickly jumped in the air knowing the rules very well as Rajasthan Royals had scored more boundaries and had clinched the game for them. But the more extreme example of this, was in the 2010 Women’s T20 World Cup when England and Australia played out a thriller - both teams were all out for 104 in normal time. And then tied at 6/2 at the end of the super over. When the boundary countback was done - they had both scored 11 boundaries. The only difference - Australia had a six among them. Hence Australia were deemed winners for having hit the only six in the game!
Steven Davies is the only known male cricketer to have come out as gay. But it seems to be more acceptable among women cricketers as we have had many couples among teammates and occasionally among opponents too. During the 2018 Women’s World Cup, Dane Van Niekerk and Marizanne Kapp, fresh from their fairytale wedding found themselves together with South Africa in a bit of a bother at 6 runs for 2 wickets down. They stitched together a 67 run partnership which enabled South Africa to chase down a modest target set by Sri Lanka. In the process they became the first married couple to bat together in a world cup match. They say matches are made in heaven, but here the maidens have made their matches.
Recently retired legend Ravichandran Ashwin is truly a legal eagle. In one of the most "Wait, what just happened?" moments in cricket, R Ashwin and the Tamil Nadu Premier League served up a spicy plate of DRS drama. The match between Dindigul Dragons and Ba11sy (Please note spelling) Trichy turned into a saga, all thanks to one mischievous delivery in the 13th over. It all started when Trichy’s R Rajkumar was given out caught-behind off Ashwin by umpire K Srinivasan. Rajkumar wasn’t having it, called for a review—and boom! Verdict overturned. Not out. Most players would just get on with the game. Not Ashwin. Ashwin turned into a cinematic persona and said “I am reviewing your review” and went for a second DRS on the same ball. TV umpires watched the replay (again), checked UltraEdge (again) and returned the same decision (again) - the batter was not out. Ashwin clearly wasn’t impressed. In the end it didn’t hamper the result as Ashwin’s team went on to a comfortable victory.
