Bonjour
The global spotlight in the next month or so will be on Paris or as the locals quite arrogantly point out - Pareee. The ‘City of Lights’ is well-known for the locals’ disdain for anything non-Parisian. Stroll down the Champs-Élysées, dodging cigarette butts and snooty glares from impeccably dressed Parisians who've perfected the art of looking down their noses. And you must be In-Seine, if you miss out on a boat ride in a shitty river and miss out on the romance. But let's all give a French toast to the city that has decided to host the Olympics in a week’s time.
This week we take a look at some Fun Facts about Paris.
Things we learnt this week 🤓
If you ask 100 people what they associate with Paris, 99 of them will tell you Eiffel tower and the 100th will be Guy de Maupassant who would eat inside the Eiffel Tower to avoid looking at the Tower. But the iconic tower could have been in Barcelona. There is a myth that Gustave Eiffel offered his design to Barcelona but was rejected for aesthetic reasons. In 1888 Barcelona was going to host the World’s Fair and needed a showpiece structure for it, but Eiffel’s design was rejected. It was picked up by Paris for their own World Fair in 1889, but there was a lot of resistance to the tower from the French intellectuals. It was stipulated that the tower would stand for 20 years after which it would be sold for scrap. Today, it has been valued for nearly $500 billion. If you take a tumble in Paris, do you say Eiffel?
Paris is considered the fashion capital of the world. It is where Indira Gandhi got her first Bouffant hairstyle, which she made famous in India. Before her tryst with
destinyprime-ministership, Indira Gandhi visited Paris along with her father in 1962 and visited Desfosse Hairdresser and got her iconic hairstyle done there. Once back in India, Habib Ahmed, the father of celebrity hair stylist Jawed Habib was tasked with maintaining the hairstyle and keeping the colour in check. Given that the Nehru family lineage gave us 3 Prime Ministers, you will say that they had a great heir-line 🥁
Shankar who recently made the much panned Indian 2, is known for his larger than life films. In 1998, he made the film Jeans (Jeans is a pun on genes as the film is about twins. Really). There was a lot of hype about a song that saw the crew go to all 7 wonders of the world. Interestingly the portion in Paris in front of the Eiffel Tower was delayed because of the death of Princess Diana just a few blocks away. Similarly, a stunt sequence was also shot near the Pyramids in Egypt, when a bomb blast occurred in a bus nearby. When it comes to Shankar's films, even reality can't resist adding a dramatic twist.
