Connect Rakhi Sawant, Md Kaif & Jaaved Jaffrey | #198
Tis the season again!
The Lok Sabha elections are upon us. The world witnesses the ‘Dance of Democracy’ or as Varun Grover put it - the naked dance. (although Nanga Naach in Hindi sounds better).
Political parties are now in stressed HR mode - find deserving candidates to fill up vacancies with a looming project deadline. For this week’s newsletter, we take a look at some interesting people who have contested the elections in India.
Things we learnt this week 🤓
Back in 2014 Rakhi Sawant, decided to contest the elections from Mumbai North-West constituency. She fought under a ‘Rashtriya Aam Party’ which had a chilli as a symbol. She campaigned in a fluorescent green outfit and confidently predicted her victory in the elections. In the end, she polled about 2000 votes and secured less than 0.2% of the votes of the constituency. NOTA (None of the above) gave her a rap on the knuckles, by securing more than 11000 votes.
Phoolpur is a constituency in Uttar Pradesh from where Prime Ministers such as Jawaharlal Nehru and VP Singh have been elected. Mohammad Kaif, famous for his heroics in the 2002 Natwest Trophy final, decided to try his luck in the constituency as a candidate from the Congress party. Known for his athleticism, he fielded tough questions from the press, but was unable to win over the voters and came 4th with around 6% of the votes. Kaif couldn’t catch the voters well.
Jaaved Jaffrey told a generation of Indians that Maggi tomato sauce is different. He thought the party that he joined was also different - the Aam Aadmi Party. He contested elections in Lucknow in 2014. Lucknow seems to have a habit of attracting celebrity politicians - Raj Babbar fought against Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1996, filmmaker Muzzafar Ali of Umrao Jaan fame tried his luck in 1998, but failed to beat Vajpayee. Jaaved entered politics, with an aim of removing the shortcomings in the system, but the Lucknow electorate did not seem to get his message. He polled less than 5% of the votes and lost to BJP’s bigwig Rajnath Singh.
