and speaking of God - a deep dive into AR Rahman's early career
Hey there!
We’re having an exciting time planning the next quiz for you fine folx. Watch this space for an announcement about our upcoming big quiz. But until then why don’t you binge (re)watch Season 1 of India Wants To Know and tell your friends about it for good karma.
Push-ups to help you prep for future quizzes:
The Lord decided to testify as a witness in a court case. Well, that is the legend of the Sakshigopala temple in Odisha. The story goes that Lord Gopala agreed to testify as a witness on behalf of a devotee. His only condition was that the devotee should lead the way to court without looking back – but he did, and the god became a statue. There are more interesting tales in this wonderful article on Legal status of Hindu Idols by Vikram Doctor.
Danny Boyle is part of the credits in Dev D. Surprised? Danny taught Anurag the technique of “Camera Tripping” which enabled Anurag to show that the character was tripping without showing drugs. As they say in appropriate lingo - “He sent it properly.”
August 15th marked the 28th anniversary of the release of Mani Ratnam’s Roja. It also meant that India and the world was introduced to a musical sensation.
Things we’re reading / watching / listening to:
Black Books - A cult offbeat British comedy starring Dylan Moran, Tasmin Greig and Bill Bailey set in a small bookshop in London. It’s witty, slapstick, and nihilstic all thrown into one. Plus we’d watch anything with Bill Bailey in it ❣️
Barkha Dutt on newslaundary - She talks to Abhinandan Sekhri about her experiences covering the migrant crisis in India. Bonus: Nidhi Razdan on The Seen & The Unseen talking about the state of journalism in India. Two exemplary journalists talking about issues that really matter, with honesty and integrity. 💯
