Knock Knock
Who’s there?
Boo
Boo Who?
Don’t cry, it's just a joke.
As much as we’d like to, we can’t take credit for writing this knock-knock joke. The credit goes to ChatGPT - an AI chatbot that’s been in the news recently.
Heartened by the prompt response to our query, we asked it to write this week’s newsletter too. The results were less than satisfactory, so our writer's job is safe for now. Or maybe the previous sentence was written by the AI bot to not arouse any suspicion. Hmm 🤖
With all this talk of AI taking over the world, this week’s newsletter features unusual applications of AI, some of which will surprise you.
Things we learnt this week 🤓
Beer brewing is one of the oldest arts in the world. The earliest beer was brewed in the 6th century BC. It’s safe to say there is enough data for a data scientist to mine. Thus, some enterprising folk created a ML model using over 260,000 beer brewing recipes and brewed beer with the recipe. The result - the beer tasted like any other brewed beer. Well atleast it didn’t taste unbeerable.
Thousands of plant species depend on bee pollination for their survival. Due to human activity, there is a danger that bees might be extinct soon. So scientists have developed the most-human solution possible - bee robots. These bees use deep learning techniques to identify flowers for pollination and then vibrate near the flowers - which shakes the pollen. Apparently all this data is stored on USBees.
What smells work for you? There is an ongoing collaboration between a German fragrance manufacturer Symrise and IBM to determine what is the best perfume for you. They have analysed chemical formulas of all perfumes to determine which smell will be liked by people. We wouldn’t be surprised if the most expensive perfume in their catalogue is named “Elon musk”. Nothing makes scents anymore.
