Fun with Flags, & Miss World's passport | #116
Also, the man who designed India's national flag ➡️
Mitron,
As we are approaching India’s 75th Independence Day, there has been a lot of talk about flags. Prime Minister Modi, wants all of us to change our display pictures to the national flag. Well, we can’t change our pic on this newsletter, but we certainly can give you Fun Facts™ about flags.
This week’s newsletter is dedicated to flags. We assure you there are no red flags here.
Things we learnt this week 🤓
Burning the flag is seen as a way of protest against authorities or against an enemy country. But in the United States, it is a legal way to get rid of flags. If the Star-Spangled banner is not fit for display, the US flag code says that it should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. Clearly, the country has burning issues on hand.
Haiti and Liechtenstein's flag had two equal-sized horizontal bands of blue and red colours. It was only during the 1936 Olympics, that the countries discovered they shared the exact same flag. The 2 countries decided to modify their flags by adding symbols. The flagmaker of Liechtenstein clearly Haited Haiti after that.
Talking about sporting occasions and flags, Ivory Coast’s Murielle Ahouré won the 60m race at the World Indoor Championships held in 2018 at Birmingham. It was her country’s first ever gold medal at the championships. She didn’t find an Ivory Coast flag to celebrate. So, a quick thinking Ahouré found an Irish flag and turned it around and celebrated.
