100 is the basis for money in this world - most currencies are divided into 100 sub-units. 100 is the number you want to call in India, if you have witnessed a crime. 100 is the sum of the cubes of the first 4 integers. (Check that yourself).
100 is a significant milestone in a lot of fields. So this 100th edition of our newsletter, we look at interesting things related to 100.
Things we learnt this week š¤
āOK Google tell me a jokeā āGoogle was initially called Backrub and got its name due to a spelling mistake for the mathematical term of 1 followed by 100 zerosā. Google, when it started out as a research project for 2 PhD students Larry Page and Sergey Brin, initially gave their search engine the name - Backrub, because their search engine checked backlinks to estimate the importance of a website. Sean Anderson, another PhD student, wrote Googolplex - a named derived from Googol (1 followed by 100 zeros). Larry Page shortened it to Googol and asked Sean to check if the domain was available. Sean instead searched for Google.com due to an incorrect spelling, which was available. Time for our favorite Google Joke - Do you work at Google? No but I google at work.
Ravi Shastri might today be known for his tracer bullets and his gotis, but back in the 80ās he was mighty fine cricketer, who won the āChampion of Championsā award in the World Championship of Cricket 1985. The prize - an Audi 100. The Indian team took a lap of honor on the car and splashed champagne all over it. Hence a different model was shipped back to India.
The ā100 crore clubā is the holy grail for all film makers in India these days. Can you guess the first Indian film to breach the 100 crore mark? Disco Dancer, has good claims to be the first Indian film to 100 crores. Though a cult hit and moderately successful in India, Disco Dancer had a dream run in Soviet Union and is the highest grossing Foreign film in Soviet Union. It earned 60 million Roubles (today $190M USD). Mithun Chakraborthy still has a lot of fan clubs in Russia today.
